All that matters is that hundreds of thousands of people have studied and successfully learned English in this same schools.

Tutorials: Tutorials are the one-on-one versions of language courses. Despite the common belief that they benefit the learners best because the learner has the undivided attention of the teacher, they are in practice considerably less efficient than language courses. One important advantage of language courses, which is totally missing in tutorials, is the chance for the learners to engage in “natural communication” with their peers — their classmates. In contrast, in a tutorial, the learner must talk to the teacher. This is an excruciating experience; the learner may think inadequate in terms of language, knowledge and confidence, none of which is conducive to learning. The learner may actually develop a resentment for a fear of learning English.

Yet, if you cannot fit into any available language courses because of your school or your job, then a tutorial is the next best option. To choose a tutor, look for the best teachers in language schools.

Also, see if the tutor uses a reliable “coursebook” published by a reliable “publisher”. This ensures a smoother, safer, and more productive journey. Avoid those who claim to have “devised a method”, who use meaningless terms (e.g., “free discussion”, “film class”, or “no-bool approach”), and who have no school experience.

Online Courses and Tutorials: The online versions of both language courses and tutorials, in this same order, have the advantages and disadvantages of the in-person experience. However, they also have advantages and disadvantages that are intrinsic to the nature of “online communication”. We should remind ourselves that many of the disadvantages are being increasingly managed as new tachylogias evolve, and new advantages emerge every day.

Here, too, the school or the teacher with school experience is the best choice. However, a reasonable degree of facility for digital technology is a must.

Self-Study Apps & AI: Though growing incredibly fast, these techs are still in their infancy. Some are doing a great job. Others, are just gimmicks. Successful language publishers are among the developers whose products can be used with more confidence.

Online forums and discussion groups obviously provide an invaluable place where you can learn and contribute to others’ learning. After overcoming the potential initial stage fright, you will of course enjoy the company of, hopefully, some great people, too.

Extensive Reading & Listening: This is the golden key to success. Getting yourself exposed to as much authentic and (generally) comprehensible English as you can, you will learn and learn to love English. Extensive Reading & Listening is, in our opinion the best complementary method you can employ.
